Clear Aligners vs. Traditional Braces

Clear Aligners vs. Traditional Braces

January 1, 2024

Our Dentists at Viva Dental Wellness often perform orthodontic treatments for patients. Our dentist near you knows how important it is to have a straight, well-aligned smile. It can improve the way you talk, eat, and how your bite sits.

Now that clear aligners have started to become more and more popular, many people are wondering if they’re better than traditional braces. Our Dentists in Windermere, Edmonton, encourage each patient to meet with their dentist to go over which orthodontic treatment is best for them.

Traditional Braces

Traditional wire braces have been used for decades to help people get the smile of their dreams. There are several different types of streamlined braces, including tooth-colored ceramic, gold, and stainless steel.

One of the major disadvantages of traditional braces is how visible they are. This can affect one’s confidence, and appointments for tightening can bring discomfort. The braces are affixed to the teeth for the duration of the treatment.

The brackets and wires may cause irritation to the tissues in the mouth, but patients eventually become accustomed to it. It’s essential that those with traditional braces keep them free from plaque, gum, and food debris.

People wearing streamlined braces will have to avoid foods and beverages that are hard, crunchy, chewy, and sticky. It’s best to avoid sugars, acids, and any carbonated beverage to keep tooth enamel intact.

Clear Aligners

Clear aligners like Invisalign® are becoming more and more popular for several reasons. These custom-made aligners are thin, clear, and invisible to the naked eye. Every two to four weeks, patients will go in for new aligners as the teeth begin to move.

Clear braces are removable and should be taken out when you’re brushing your teeth, eating, or drinking anything other than water. They should stay in place for at least 22 hours each day. The disadvantage of removable aligners is they can become easily lost.

Just like traditional braces, there is slight discomfort when you switch to a new set. It’s essential to keep the aligners in to get the results you desire. Call Viva Dental Wellness today to contact dentists near you for more information.
